PLEASURE GROUNDS:
BARREN

FIFTY TONS OF SAND LIFTED - OPERATING IN 30FT OF WATER - 10FT DEEPER

“Twelve hundred and fifty tons of sand lifted from the harbour bed in 44 minutes. This was the performance of the now hopper dredge, Matthew Flinders, on the official trials off Chowder Bay yesterday. Operating in 30ft. of water the dredge left that particular part of the harbor bed 10ft. deeper after three quarters of an hour test. ”

OIL TANKS - DESECRATION - HEIGHTS AT GALLIPOLI - BARREN - HARBOUR POLLUTION - SALT-WATER BATHING - DREDGE - MUD-WORM - INTERFERING - RECREATION

“Protest meeting asked for decision to put oil tanks at Chowder Bay was the worst desecration of Sydney Harbor in two generations, and the least excusable, said Mr. D. G. Stead, yesterday. Mr. Stead spoke at a meeting of the Parks and Playgrounds Movement of N.S.W., and added that the Minister for Defence, Mr. Parkhlll, deserved censure.

In years to come the land at Chowder Bay would look like the heights at Gallipoli, and equally as barren. The president, Mr. A. J. Small, said that unless action were taken Sydney would have another Darling Harbor. Faulty planning was ruining one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. It was resolved that the Lord Mayor be asked to call a public meeting of protest.”

Baths Appeal

“An appeal for baths in the Domain was made by Mr. D. Hellmrich. secretary of N.S.W. Amateur Swimming Association. Harbour pollution was numbering the days of salt-water bathing in the Harbor. A modern filtered-water pool was needed. The appeal was endorsed, provided there was no conflict with Macquarie Street re-planning.

On an application to dredge Port Hacking for sea shells, it was pointed out that disturbance to the prehistoric sea shell beds would cause spread of mud-worm, affecting oysters and interfering with fishing and recreation.

Marks pointed out that land was too valuable to hope for resumptions to comply with the suggestion to take over Macleay House, Darlinghurst, for the nation, with land for playground”

- HARBOR DESECRATION: OIL TANKS AT CHOWDER  in The Telegraph, 11th July 1935

there remains a strong desire to allow salt-water bathing and swimming to take place in the harbour once again.
Clover Moore has opened a
swimming space in Barangaroo, and the steps in Blackwattle Bay leading to the water suggest we will once again be able to enter

BEAUTIFUL RETREAT - THE NAUTILUS STEAMER - FAIRYLAND - COMFORT OF THE PUBLIC

“This beautiful retreat for picnic parties will be open on CHRISTMAS DAY and after. Everything will be sold at Sydney prices, and of the very best quality. Provisions, wines, spirits, ales. The Nautilus Steamer will run from the Circular Quay at 10,12, 2, and 1 from Woolloomooloo at 11 and 3; and from Fairyland as late as required.

Let all bear in mind the former comforts of the Fairy Bower, the now deserted spot, and that the Fairy Queen and her spirits now settle permanently at her own sacred home, the Fairyland, where she rests in peace to watch over the comfort of the public.”
